Now that you have finished reading, discussing, and analyzing The Giver, blog a response to this question:
Would you consider Jonas to be a hero? Explain.
I think Jonas is a hero because he rescued Gabe and went through many obsticals to reach his destination in the end. He under went the harsh training of the job Reciever and lasted.
Is Jonas a hero? Well, I think he is. He didn’t save the world or anything, yet he saved a wholoecommunity from the worst thing possible: Sameness. Now that he has saved Gabriels life, and renewed the communitie’s personality and differences, he is a hero. Scarificing something for the better of others is being a hero, and Jonas did just that.

I think he is, because he reminded his town about how the world really is.
I don’t think Jonas is a hero. He was to unaccepting of his post in the begining and I think that his opinion did not change. Jonas might have saved Gabe, but, what if he failed? What if the search planes fond him? Would they have killed him? Would they “release” Gabe so he would have not memory of this event? Who knows what could have happened. If they did catch and kill them, Would he be a hero then?

i would consider jonas to be a hero. this is because he is willing to care about the people that he loves, and is dilligent in his daily life. he can recognize evil when he sees it, and he will do what he can to stop it and help The Giver in his mission. That is why i think Jonas is a hero.
I would consider Jonas as a hero because he was responsible and knew what was right. He helped out the community by leaving and sharing the memories. He is a good kid.
I would consider jonas as a heroe bacause he took on many challenges such as being the reciever of memorys. This is a huge job and he took the responsibilites.
I don’t think Jonas is a hero at all. Jonas didn’t stay to help the community; he ran away from his troubles. Sure, Jonas helped Gabe get out of there too, so he does get some points for saving an innocent life, but other than that he’s done nothing but run. He wasn’t The Receiver by choice, so he was being forced to hold the memories for the community. He never helped by his own power, never lifted a finger. Sure, he whined about the killing known as “Releasing” and didn’t like losing innocent lives, but it was completely The Giver’s idea for him to run away, which would cause the memories to go back to the community, which would cause people to commit suicide and have the town go into chaos. The Giver stayed back to help the people, and if Jonas had gone back and helped them through it I would have considered him a hero, but from how the book ended, I consider him nothing more than a stick in the sand.

I think that Jonas is a hero becasue he tried to help the comunity in a way. He may have helped them when he left or he may not have. I dont agree with kate because there is a diffence between running away form his problems, and walking away when there is nothing that he can do. He COULD have tried to change his village but he would have been released and the village would have gone on living. but instead he gave them the knowlege that he had gained over the time that he was reciver.
I don’t consider Jonas a hero. He isn’t that bad, but he jjust isn’t good enough to be considered a hero. Jonas said he didn’t care about the community. He felt that he was better than the rest because of luck. (He was simply lucky to have been chosen to be a Reciever. He simply happened to have light eyes. He didn’t make a concious descision to help or change the community.) And instead of trying first, he simply ran away. Jonas cared more for himself than making the community better. Jonas is not a hero.
jonas could be considerd a hero or villan.
as Jari said “Jonas said he didn’t care about the community. He felt that he was better than the rest because of luck. (He was simply lucky to have been chosen to be a Reciever” which is true in the boook he says that he is beter. But he also said he was beter then them because he knew that it was wrong to kill and that he was difrent. But as Theo said “He didn’t save the world or anything, yet he saved a wholoecommunity from the worst thing possible: Sameness.” but Jonas also saved a baby from being killed. but he ran away from the comunity and said he didn’t care about them any more.
i think Jonas could be a hero but i can also see how can not be a hero too.
i say he could be ether.
I think Jonas is because he went through many obsticals to reach his destination in the end and he went through harsh training of the job Reciever and he lasted. So thats why i think he is a hero
)
I dont think Jonas was a hero because he didnt really do anything except run away from the community and almost dies what trait is that?? because cowardlyness wasnt one of them =D
I like Jonas and he was very kind person but at the begining I wouldn’t consider him a hero because the whole time it seemed like he only cared for himself and nobody else execpt the giver and gabe but at the end I would consider him a hero because he did everything he could for gabe and took a big risk by steeling him. So in conculsion he is a hero. And not just that but an American who tells the truth.
this book was very confusing to me, like why do they have to live by rules and why can’t you get a bike at the age of 5 not at the age of 9 years old. But the most thing that gets me is that you can’t lie and you have to tell your dreams when you get up. After reading I am going to tell you that this book was confusing.

yes of course jonas is a hero! he made a really big difference in his community. when we were all reading the book, most people thought that the community was really strange. Jonas was the one who finally recognized that with the help of the Giver. Because of him now his community can have feelings!
yes Jonas is a hero because he made a hgue difference in his community!
